The Butterfly Poem

I AM A JEW
by Franta Bass

I am a Jew and will be a Jew forever.
Even if I should die from hunger,
never will I submit.
I will always fight for my people,
on my honor.
I will never be ashamed of them,
I give my word.

I am proud of my people,
how dignified they are.
Even though I am suppressed,
I will always come back to life.

I'm feeling a lot of pride and honesty coming from the author.

  1. I like the poem and the courage for him to say all of that and not caring because its his beliefs and he would die for it wich not ,amy of us would do. The drawing is great and I like how you you drew the wings for the last part of the poem.

  2. Your butterfly is very pretty and I like the colors you used. Is there any reason you made the wing shape the way you did? I think the poem states 'I am a Jew and will be a Jew forever.' Because it's just showing how he/she can't change who they are or care about what others think, not to be ashamed. Is the shape like that to represent the different types of butterfly wings, to show the difference in people & race.

  4. This story is awesome because the person that is taking is saying that they will never give up on his or her people. Why wasn't he or she scared of the soldiers? If I wrote this poem I would have thought about the same thing stand up for them selfs and there own people

  5. Wow! Amazing job on your butterfly! Do your colors have a representation? I honestly think this poem shows how strong the author was and how he knew he wasn't doing anything wrong by being Jewish. I admire this author and kind of idolize him. It takes a lot to stand for what you believe in and such a strong personality and person. Truly an inspiration to all the Jewish people. To answer my question, great way of using the red fading to represent hell and blue to represent heaven. Great job on your Butterfly and such a great poem!

  6. I love your color choice for the heaven and hell I felt like you chose the right colors. Reading this poem shows how confident this person is about who they are. After learning and reading about your poem did you ever question if the person died? On your thing link I agree with you on drawing the muscles because the poet did show pride and strength.

  9. The butterfly is nice colored in with the colors you choose. The poem is so good especially on the "I'm a Jew and will be Jew forever ",this is really make you think a lot, because what you are you are always going to be like your nationality and ,never forget about it. Everything else was great you know that the kid was passing through bad moments so if he died he would died being Jewish.

  10. You did very good on your butterfly. I like how you drew muscles because he is showing strength and hope. As he said, "I am proud of my people" and also the line "I will always fight for my people." Shows him having hope in his people. A question that I have is, why did you put an outline of black? I think you did that because he is also trapped in a bad situation but having a lot of hope. The poem is very interesting. Some people didn't have any hope. They just kept thinking about all of this bad stuff happening. I like how you said, "These angel wings represent the ending of the poem when he writes, Even though I am suppressed I will always come back to life."

  12. The angel wings go great with the poem, they are nicely drawn out as wel. In the poem it says " I am a Jew and will be a Jew forever." What makes him/her so proud to be a Jew. I think that when he/she says they are proud to be a Jew it means that even if there was bad in there life good will always come out of it. So being a Jew is nothing different from just being a regular person.

  13. I like how the person didn't lose hope of getting out of the camp even though at the end of the poem when they said "Even though I am suppressed I will always come back to life. It also sounds like this person was a person with a strong will a fighter in the beginning of the poem and the end. I like how you drew it looks like muscular arms meaning probably that the person was strong person not to cry to keep having faith that's evidence. I have a question how old do you think the child was. My answer I think the child was a teen because I know from other poems that children lost hope in escaping and cried.
